Improving Tourism Promotion Using Google Street View

Elba Smart Exploring was a project commissioned by Visit Elba to enable anyone with a smartphone to explore the island's outdoor trails.

The island, housing over 200 beaches and 350 km of trails, wanted to focus its marketing towards outdoor adventure based holidaymakers.

By mixing Street View 360 imagery with dedicated online websites and content, the aim was to give tourists booking their visits the tools to plan their excursions by choosing and building personalised itineraries, from the comfort of their sofa.

The Elba Smart Exploring website allows you to choose your hike and start your virtual expedition.

The project received significant press attention, consequently helping to drive a 10% increase in tourism during the second half of 2018, measured by ferry tickets to the island (the only way on and off).

The project was presented by Federico Debetto, Head of Photography, at the 2018 Google Street View Summit in Mountain View.

About Elba Smart Exploring

Elba Exploring Smart was the first systematic mapping of the island, commissioned by Visit Elba.

The project is in line with a strategy, Elba Active, that launched in 2016, which sees the island increasingly projected towards ​​outdoor activities, healthy food and nature.
